Who is Suzanne Valadon?
Passionate, creative Suzanne Valadon was a model with whom Renoir was reputed to have been romantically involved.
Suzanne Valadon also modeled for Puvis de Chavannes and Toulouse-Lautrec and eventually became a painter herself.
The Umbrellas depicts a bustling street in Paris as people rush to escape a rain shower that seems to be just staring. The main figure in the foreground is a Suzanne Valadon who is carrying what appears to be a basket or perhaps a hatbox. She is looking straight at the viewer as if resigned to her fate and the oncoming rain.
As in Dance at Bougival, Renoir has used Suzanne Valadon’s dress to capture a few faces that not immediately apparent to the eye.
