Picasso with Girl before a Mirror

Pablo Picasso is well known as one of the greatest and most influential artists of the twentieth century.

Picasso was 51 years old when he painted Girl before a Mirror. It was painted in March 1932 by during Picasso’s cubism period. The painting portrays a young woman surveying herself in an oval mirror. The girl in the painting name Marie Theresa Walter and it was painted multiple times during the 1930’s.

Marie-Theresa Walter was seventeenth years old on the day she met Picasso in 1927, when he struck up a conversation with her outside a Parisian department store.

They soon began a secret affair and Picasso rented an apartment for her. By the winter of 1931, he was using her as a model. By 1932 she had become a well-established and profoundly transformative presence in Picasso’s art and life.
